My name is Dave Bussard (pronounced "Buzzard") and I live in West Des Moines, Iowa with my wife Carmen and son Jake. I'm a lover of all things related to nature and creation, and sometimes I can hardly believe I'm so fortunate to have a job that enables me to create with, and in, nature. I LOVE watching a sculpture take form at the tip of my chainsaw.
I not only carve portable pieces, I carve stumps in people's yards too, and have traveled as far as California to carve two stumps at a customer's cabin in the mountains. I also entertain by carving at birthday parties, tractor shows, fairs, and festivals.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
My neighbors knew that back in the early 90's I did tree removal professionally. They showed me a few trees and asked if I would be able to help them by cutting them down if they rented the man-lift. I was glad to help a neighbor and friend so I spent a couple days in a man-lift doing what I enjoy doing—running a chainsaw.
After the trees were down the neighbor, Sarah, asked if I thought I could carve the leftover tree stumps into mushrooms. Without thinking much about it I said, "Sure, no problem."
The next few days as I looked out my front windows I saw quite a few people stop and smile at the mushrooms as they walked past them on the sidewalk. When I saw two different couples stop and take pictures with their children and puppy standing next to the mushrooms I knew I had stumbled onto something good. I immediately grabbed my chainsaw and started carving.
